William Playfair’s designs for Old College as a series of individual buildings. These plans were realised between 1798 and1827 and form much of the current architecture of Old College.
The small image shows the triumphal arch before the facade was completed by Robert Rowand Anderson with the addition of the dome in 1887.
Recent investigations by the project architects have shown that the octagonal geometry of the former exam hall was covered up in the 1970s alterations. This octagonal framework will be reinstated and form a special collections room in the New Law Library.
