Plans

The Old College refurbishment project will be carried out in a single phase. Here’s how each section of the building will transform.

Southwest side and Northwest corner

Phase 1 plans

  • Pink – New Law Library

Work will begin on creating an entirely new Law Library which will be located at the Southwest end of Old College. It will extend over two floors, from the basement (lower ground) to the ground floor with a new mezzanine level and will wrap around the entire Northwest corner of Old College. It will include: a special collections room; an octagonal book store mirroring the original architectural design covered up in the 1970s; large quiet-study space rooms; study pods; an electronic resource room; and a dedicated reception.

  • Turquoise – Teaching space

Lecture Theatre 270 will remain in its current location and will be refurbished preserving its architectural features. The first floor will become a series of flexible teaching spaces with in built-in teaching technology walls. The interconnecting walls will be removable to ensure maximum flexibility for the functionality of the rooms.

  • Blue – Academic offices

All the academic offices will be completely upgraded and refurbished to allow cool, open, clean and functional rooms with plenty of book storage and desk space.

  • Other features

The original ‘Adam’ staircase will be retained and the handrails restored.

North side

Phase 2 plans

  • Pink – New Law Library

A special collections study space on the lower ground floor will be added and a large, open study space holding 76 will be created on the ground floor.

  • Light green – Social space

An undergraduate social space and non-quiet study area will be developed on the lower ground floor. A new open social space will extend across the middle portion of the first floor. This will feature a cafe, coffee room style, raised table and standard table seating areas. This space will be open to all.

  • Green – Teaching space

The first and second floor will feature fully equipped small teaching spaces ideal for tutorials or meetings.

  • Blue – Academic offices

All the academic offices will be completely upgraded and refurbished to allow cool, open, clean and functional rooms with plenty of book storage and desk space.

  • Other features

A new open and bright reception area and foyer, with exhibition space, a new central staircase and lifts will be created on the ground floor.

 North side

Phase 3 plans

  •  Purple – Study space

The lower ground floor will contain a new study/social space reserved specifically for Early Career and Contract Researchers and a separate hub specifically for Masters students.

  • Blue – Academic office spaces

The lower ground floor will contain office spaces specifically for visiting academics and teaching fellows, with the remaining floors being used for permanent academic staff. The Head of Schools Office will remain close to the hub of the School on the ground floor.

  • Light Blue – Support staff offices

New, open-plan office spaces on the ground floor and mezzanine level will be created for support and professional services staff. Both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate  teaching support offices will have separate reception areas allowing easy access for student enquiries and support.

  • Turquoise – Teaching spaces

New large and flexible teaching spaces will be built on the first floor along with a new Moot Court Room.

South and Southeast side

Phase 4 plans

The South and Southeast side of Old College will be refurbished in a second phase after the Law School has moved back in to its rooms in January 2018.

  • Purple – Research Students

The South side basement will contain new, open plan, shared office space for research students as well as a dedicated social space for these students. The open plan space will also extend to the ground and mezzanine floors in the Southeast corner of the building, providing much needed desk and research space for PhD and research students.

  • Light purple – Research staff

The South side basement will feature dedicated office space for visiting researchers and early career and contract researchers.

  • Blue – Academic offices

The current academic offices in the South side basement will be completely refurbished and upgraded.
